My Resume'
Hearst Corporation Weekly Newspapers
- I started with the MidCounty Chronicle in Nederland, Texas in 1985, then moved to the Hardin County News in Lumberton, Texas in 1987. While working for those two Hearst weekly products, I cut my teeth on writing styles, editing basics and photography.
The Beaumont Enterprise, Sports
- I moved to The Enterprise as a sports writer for this 100,000 circulation daily. Named assistant sports editor, then sports editor. I led a department of 12, including a copy desk and a staff of 10 sports and outdoors writers.
The Beaumont Enterprise
- As managing editor for this 100,000 circulation daily, I led a newsroom crew of 35 people in sports, features, photography and design.
The Legal News Magazine
- My first experience as a publisher was, unfortunately, short-lived. Two attorneys who hired me for this monthly legal magazine opted to part ways, ending their newspaper venture. Responsibilities included writing, editing, photography, page design, ad sales and ad design.
The Examiner
- Found my way back to Southeast Texas to work as a page designer and editor.
Silsbee Bee Newspaper
- I headed back to my roots, taking over the 6,300-circulation weekly newspaper in Silsbee. During my tenure here, we won state, regional and local awards for writing, photography and design. I also took my first opportunity to develop and maintain a website, which also won awards for its design and photography. My responsibilities in Silsbee ran the gamut from writing, editing, design and production to loading the papers into the post office.
Lamar State College Port Arthur
- The opportunity to join Lamar State in Port Arthur came up and I jumped at the chance. My newspaper skills converted perfectly to the public relations framework and I spend my time writing, taking photos and designing flyers, posters, magazines and newsletters for in-house and external use. I delved into the world of social media with the college’s Facebook page. In the first year, the page increased from 56 fans to more than 1,500.
Lamar State College Port Arthur
In addition to my responsibilities for marketing and public relations for the college, I also handled sports information duties for the school's athletics program. Handled game day responsibilities, including live-streaming, action photography, post-game press releases, and updating the athletics website. Other duties included portrait photography, graphic design that included game programs, schedule posters, and producing media guides for the school's two NJCAA teams, men's basketball and softball.
GLD Designs
Since starting my career in journalism in 1985, I have taken freelance assignments that included everything from event photography to building newspaper special sections. Aside from photography for high school and college seniors, I also shot action photos of football, basketball, and baseball games. I've designed broadsheet newspaper pages for daily and weekly papers, and built and published the annual Report to the Community for the City of Port Arthur. I spent three seasons working with Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas to produce its Gameday football magazine, The Redzone. In 2020, I added website design to my repertoire. To date, I have built sites for the Museum of the Gulf Coast in Port Arthur, Texas (Home of Janis Joplin!), a commemorative website celebrating the City of Port Arthur's 125 Anniversary, a fully-integrated online store, as well as three separate sites for a trucking conglomerate in Beaumont, Texas. I am currently working on a site for a regional pickleball league.
